Join The Stranger's digital editor, Chase Burns and former Stranger visual arts critic, and culture writer, Jasmyne Keimig for a "Watch With Me" viewing party of Diana Szienblum's "Alaska."
ABOUT ALASKA
Named after a place that everyone knows but no one has been, Alaska is a sensual dance theater portrayal of memory. Choreographer Diana Szeinblum uses dark humor, extreme physicality, original music and a minimal set to create a beautiful spectacle that gravitates between uneasy stillness and violent frenzy.

ABOUT THE HOSTS
Chase Burns has written about drag, theater, Orbeez, Seattle’s City Council, weed lube, unstreamable films, streamable films, long-distance dating, hygge, and boner pills. He is currently the digital editor at The Stranger and used to be a classical actor. He now gets his performance-rocks off by performing as Uh Oh, a bad drag queen, at clubs around Seattle—when those were still a thing.
Jasmyne Keimig is an eldest child, former Stranger visual arts critic, and culture writer interested in weed, queer stuff, music, and film, both streamable and unstreamable. She cries easily in movies.
WHY THEY CHOSE THIS PERFORMANCE
"Alaska" is a dance performance from 2009. It is not about life in quarantine. It's about "a place that everyone knows but no one has been... a place where experiences, sensations, emotions, memories are lodged in a chaotic way." But watch it right now, in 2020, and we think you'll find that it's actually totally, strangely, perfectly about life in quarantine. Let's watch it with that in mind and find ourselves in the past. - Chase Burns
The set is stripped down--curtains don't hide the backstage area nor are the musicians tucked out of sight, rather, everything is out in the open. You can glimpse a dancer preparing to reenter onto the stage or the composer carefully watching to remain in sync with the show. The spareness of the set up add to the raw energy conjured by the performers. Nothing is extraneous, you're meant to focus on the feeling. A very apt watch when confined indefinitely indoors. - Jasmyne Keimig
